ES and QS engineering samples

Pre-production silicon — engineering samples (ES) and qualification samples (QS) — identified by their own S-Spec codes. Organised the same way as our production catalogue.

What ES and QS mean

Before a processor reaches retail it moves through validation stages. ES units come first, often with lower clocks and unfinished errata. QS units come later and are close to final silicon. Each stage carries its own S-Spec code — which is why the code on the heat spreader, not the model name, is the definitive identifier.

The stages, in order

ES1

Earliest silicon. Clocks well below retail, features may be disabled, errata unresolved.

02
ES2

Second revision. Closer to target clocks, most features enabled.

03
QS

Qualification sample. Effectively final silicon, released to partners before launch.

04
Production

Retail silicon, SR-prefixed S-Spec. This is what we stock and sell.

How to identify one

  • The S-Spec is laser-etched on the heat spreader. That code — not the printed model name — tells you exactly what you have.
  • Q-prefixed codes indicate ES or QS silicon. SR-prefixed codes indicate production units.
  • Stepping, base clock and boost behaviour frequently differ from the retail part of the same model number.
  • Markings on pre-production units are often less crisp than retail, and some carry \u201cConfidential\u201d or \u201cIntel Confidential\u201d text.

Common questions

Is an ES chip the same as the retail version?

No. Clock speeds, stepping and enabled features often differ. Two units with the same model number but different S-Spec codes can behave quite differently.

Can I tell ES from QS by looking?

Only by the S-Spec code. Both are typically Q-prefixed, and the specific code identifies which stage and revision it is.

Why does the S-Spec matter more than the model number?

Because one model number can cover several steppings and revisions. Procurement teams work from S-Spec codes for exactly this reason \u2014 it is the only unambiguous identifier.
